Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.
Officers say they were alerted late on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The substance had been drawn in the form of a banned symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then discovered many other vandalized vehicles and house walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are banned in Germany under laws outlawing the public display of Nazi symbols.
Police report early analysis indicate the substance was most likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to its origin; investigators are presently not aware of any injuries in relation with the event," they commented.
City officials said they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the community for tips.
A high-ranking political figure commented the incident left him speechless and required to be resolved quickly.
"This incident affects the center of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the right-wing attack half a decade ago," he stated on a platform, recalling the death of nine individuals by a shooter aiming at individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
