Trump's Progressive Warning Misses Europe's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document presents a misguided assessment of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" agendas represent an grave threat to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a serious misreading of the situation. The true danger facing the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Growth Gap Between Europe and the US

The data paint a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry 13.5% growth for the European Union. During this time, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Problem

The growing disparity stems from superior efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology leadership is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over $10bn, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several key reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and agile system for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a true unified investment market, which caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is split among 27 separate regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, one can find reasons for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to propose substantial change. Key reports on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping changes.

With the right incentives and rule changes, these assets could support far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements could unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically boost productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. But, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
